The Hunt for Red October is a story about two political leaders ignited with conflict and stress. The movie is about a captain of a Russian submarine, Captain Remius that is equipped with nuclear weapons and is undetectable to others, who decides to defect to the US. His counterpart, Captain Macuso, of the US Navy is ordered to attack the Russian submarine. I believe both captains display some good leadership qualities, even though they have very different styles. In the following pages I’d like to point out their respective leadership qualities and how they differ. There are three “faces” that are believed to be critical to leaders today: manager, artist, and priest. Let’s start with a brief definition of each in turn. The manager “face” is described as having the following qualities: disciplined, rational, organizing, controlling, intellect, strategic and decision making. An artist will display behavior that is curious, independent, creative, emotional, and innovative. Finally, the priest “face” is ethical, pure empathetic, inspiring, comforting, and transcendent. Let’s begin with Captain Remius. Remius clearly showed a managerial “face” throughout the movie. To begin with he sent the letter before they even left on his submarine to the Russian government that stated his intentions. He was a highly intelligent man that CIA agent Jack Ryan described as a “legend in the submarine community”. Ryan pointedly stated that Remius had “trained most of their officer corps which would put him in a position to select men willing to help him”. Remius was a serene, independent captain that remained calm even when facing certain death from torpedoes that were coming directly at his submarine. Remius’s priest “face” was hard to me to detect, especially in the beginning because it was hard to tell if his intentions were good or bad. However, when the truth came out it was
