In many ways, America can be seen as the land of the plenty. But for 1 in 4 residents in Southeastern Virginia, hunger is a reality. Many people believe that hunger is found in small areas of a country or certain neighborhoods in small areas of society, but in reality, it’s very different. Right now, millions of Americans are struggling with hunger. We might even know and aren’t aware of people who are affected by hunger. These people are mostly individuals who can’t make ends meet or who find themselves forced to make difficult choices after suffering devastating personal or financial crises beyond their control. For the past thirty years, they have worked toward eliminating hunger in their community. Over the years the Food bank has grown in size and impact, increasing pounds of food distributed to countless people. The food bank has helped over 414,000 people annually by distributing food through 400 Partner Agencies and programs. Money donated by people can help purchase food needed to provide balanced meals and support the operations of all their food programs. For every $1 dollar they donate, the food bank can purchase $6 worth of food and groceries. People can also volunteer at programs associated with the food bank. There are soup kitchens, faith-based pantries, neighborhood centers, family crisis centers, senior centers, and homeless shelters for adults and children. Hunger has been attributed to significant health problems including poor infant and child development leading to learning difficulties and behavior problems both in school and within the community. In many communities where hunger is a significant issue the rates of school absenteeism are high. There is also a known connection between mental health and hunger as food insecurity creates tremendous stress for both individuals and families. But if people educate themselves about hunger and spend a little of their time giving and helping out at local food banks and their associated programs, you can know that you have helped put food on the table of their neighbors in need.
