Humanity vs. Humans “I love humanity. It’s people I can’t stand.” There are two meanings of humanity; one being the collective of the human race while the other is the quality of being humane – in other words being kind or merciful. The real question lies in whether the two are actually comparable? Humans as a species consider themselves to be supreme and above all other beings. Some people believe that we, as humans, are a divine creation – so far to the point that we were created in “God’s image”. This may or may not be true, but if it is then what have humans done to contribute to the planet in order to have such a high rank in the chain of beings? It is a well known fact that if the human population were to be completely eradicated from the planet, there would be no effect on the balance of nature. In fact, nature as a whole would flourish and be far greater than it is now. The reason for this is because of something I’d like to call “The human condition”. The human condition is what I've observed over the past few years. I've come to realize that people constantly need to invent or discover new things. It has somehow become an obsession and there is not one mystery in life – be it in nature or anything else – that will ever remain a mystery. This wouldn't be a problem if people didn't use and exploit these discoveries to their own advantage. People are picking away at this planet piece by piece and will eventually leave nothing but smog clouded skies and stump ridden forests. Humanity talks about kindness and mercy yet when it comes to the planet we see no such thing. Yes, there used to be people who were viewed as selfless and merciful but that number seems to be slipping. With time people are more concerned about their own well being than the being of others or the things around them. The term “Humanity”, although used in the most innocent sense of the
