1. How was Samsung able to go from copycat brand to product leader? Founder Lee Byung-Chull created a “new management” (p. 285) strategy for the entire company. They wanted to be known as a cutting edge leader instead of a copycat. Chull hired fresh new designers to produce products that were sleek and bold. Samsung called them “lifestyle works of art” (p. 286). Samsung then began to position itself by leaving its low end distributors and formed relationships with specialty retailers. Today, Samsung is seen as a leader in innovation rather than a follower of trends. 2. Is Samsung’s product development process customer centered? Team based? Systematic? Deciding when a product has reached the maturity stage, would be the most difficult challenge in my opinion. At this point, they would need to decide if they should modify the product or abandon it. In the case of technology however, newer and improved products are constantly entering the market. Samsung could find itself with a premier product in the decline stage overnight and their reputation of being a leader in innovation could be on the line. “Keeping weak products delays the search for replacements, creates a lopsided product mix, hurts current profits, and weakens the company’s foothold on the future” (p. 270). 4. Will Samsung likely achieve its goals in markets where it does not dominate, such as smartphones? Why or why not? I believe they will. Samsung is investing heavily in unique features that Apple does not. Samsung’s large screens will be interacting with its smaller devices. Through the televisions Samsung produces, it would be able to collect data on which apps its customers like. With this pairing and app, they will be able to suggest what ads customers should receive. This control over content could be an amazing boon for Samsung. Pairing products could boost both mobile sales as well as receiver sales. It would also give customers a new experience, which Apple and others could not
