AN310 Cultural Anthropology Assignment 05 2/7/2012 How Molitor thinks technology has affected the family Communication is the most definitive contribution of technology that has changed the way we live our lives. Our jump from the beginning of time allowing for one communication per second has grown light-years into several trillion bits of communication in a mere second. Technology advancement continually improves upon prior methods of communication and becomes more efficient, faster, better and cheaper than previous methods. Technology has revolutionized the way we do everyday task from banking, transportation, communication and much more. Summary of English-Lueck’s observations on the family The home front is a conglomerate of technological devises which cultivate our very lifestyle at home and work sometimes merging the two. It’s because of our advancement in technology we are more easily accessible which is a pro and a con. For our family communication, we are able to look in on one another instantly with our cell phone or PDA. However, this has also created a false sense of security and the ability to plan things as they happen rather than plan ahead. New sets of rules within the family are established as punishment from these technologies. Our workload can now be shifted into the home front as 24 hour access to an employee via cell phone or e-mail is readily available. Family time and work time no longer seem to have a distinctive line, rather a blurring in the middle of the two. Personal affect of technological communications on family The Kish family is of an era where the old way of lifestyle became integrated with the new way of technology.
