How Evil is Lady Macbeth? Macbeth was written in 1606 by William Shakespeare and is a tragedy about the power of good over evil and the destructive result of ambition. The play was written in Jacobean times, when James 1 was King of England and followed Elizabeth 1. James 1 was also King of Scotland and wrote Demonlogie – a book about witchcraft.
