Antigone’s tragic flaw is that she is too passionate and strong-willed for her own good. She insists on burying her brother, Polyneices, even when the king forbade it. When asked why she ignored his demand Antigone replied, “I dared. It was not God’s proclamation” (783, 64-65). Antigone is telling Creon that rather than listen to his man made laws that she would rather follow the higher authority of the God’s.
Thou wouldst be great; Art not without ambition, but without the illness should attend it” (I.v.15-20) With this, she realizes that Macbeth is to laid back or nonchalant when he is not on the battle field. She calls him out on being a coward and not being able to satisfy her sexual needs as man or husband. Furthermore, because of her lack of faith in Macbeth due to his lack of ambition, I believe, “That with hath made them drunk hath made me bold: what hath quench’d them hath given me fire”(II.i.1-2), this statement proclaimed by Lady Macbeth that it was the desire for power and greed behind Lady Macbeth, not Macbeth, that caused the assassination of King Duncan. It was Lady Macbeth with the direct motive because she was blinded by the potential of riches and the ironic purity of such a social status. Both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth each came to a focal point on how to respond to the forces of fate.
She relies on physical contact to prove one as an impressive, strong person. However, her beliefs and that of her fiancé collide harshly causing their relationship to end. Her immaturity drives her soon-to-be-husband, Jim, completely away from her. Patricia’s reaction to Jim’s verbal solvents causes her to trust that Jim is a weak and vulnerable person. In all, this shows Pat’s weakness and vulnerability.
However, when he focuses on Hutchinson herself, his attitude becomes ambivalent. Hutchinson has transgressed the limits decrees for her sex and will soon be imprisoned by men, yet Hawthorne marvels at her confident sexuality and superior mind. He acknowledges the free flight of the imagination unfettered by gender, but he believes that women must pay for this gift of her peculiar “loveliness”. Hutchinson has controversial abilities, so Hawthorne holds an ambivalent attitude to her. Although he admires her, he forbids himself such emotions and censures what he fails to suppress and judges Hutchinson severely.
He goes on to talk about how much she hates her for being a faker and plans on saying, “…Marla, you big fake, you get out” (Palahniuk 24). This shows the irony that he wants her to leave for being a faker although he is just as much at fault. This can be related to men being angry that women were coming in and competing for jobs even though it was a completely reasonable thing to
There is no doubt in my mind that Acheron felt the same way. “I don’t like your hair black.” Artemis stated. The fact that she could not have him look exactly the way she wanted made her very upset at times. When love is involved, it is easy to allow yourself be abused believing it is for the best of that relationship. Acheron loved Artemis so much that he was willing to allow her dark side to inflict scars emotionally and internally, which is extremely saddening.
He is saying that is might not be wise for loving him, but he swears it won’t be stupid for he is going to be “horribly” in love with her. The word choice of “horribly” emphasizes a sense of awkwardness because he doesn’t know the first thing when it comes to love. It also gives a bit of that comical side to Benedick’s character, even in the name of love, he still can’t forget about the competition between him and Beatrice.
This conflicts her emotions because she wants to be able to mourn her brother, but she does not want to disobey her uncle. These emotions help reveal the theme because Antigone decides that she should bury her brother despite Creon’s law. Antigone is faithful to the unwritten laws of the Gods because she feels they are more important than those made by man. The theme of the play is also revealed through the external conflict between Creon and the Gods. Creon being stubborn and proud feels that he is above the laws of the almighty, he neglects to see the signs the Gods send as a warning until he has lost everything.
Sexual abuse corrupts a child as Miller showcases here. Abigail has a natural tendency for attention because she is adopted. She craves an increasingly amount of attention and out of desperation and approval she will perform any action to receive the attention as she does with John. Abigail understands that her relationship with John is forbidden and unmoral but she strives to recover the provocative relationship because she needs to know and feel that John loves her. She cries out in tears that “[John] loved [her], and whatever sin it is, [he] loved [her] yet!” and she pleads for John to “pity [her]” (Miller 24).
Serena Joy the wife of the commander Fred feels a great ability to hold power of Offred especially because of how much despises the fact that Offred has the ability to carry a child and she doesn’t. The way in which Serena’s extent of power is demonstrated is when she inflicts physical pain towards Offred during the ceremony to symbolise that Serena was overpowering Offred and stating that Fred was her husband not hers and that she shouldn’t be enjoying the sex. Serena Joy exerts her power through her fear and by inflicting fear, she fears Offred not being able to conceive a child therefore she is willing to break the rules to ensure that Offred conceives. She does this by arranging secret visits with Nick who is an eye and is meant to be monitoring the commander and his actions. However, whilst Serena feels that she holds power over Offred, she is providing power to Offred by allowing her to feel a sense of agency and a thrilling sense of the ‘time before’.
