When a city suffers an industrial decline, there is often a rise in unemployment, and there will also be a lot of derelict and unused land left behind. This has been the case in many northern cities, such as Manchester. This could be compared to how Manchester has 25% of very high household deprivation, and only 5% of very low levels of household deprivation, because Manchester also suffered industrial decline. This therefore shows that cities
(NYC Economic Development Corporation) Hunts Point has suffered from crime and poverty for many years and is part of the poorest congressional district in the country, with over half the population living below the poverty line. The community is considered to be a ‘Red Light District’ in many cases for its crime and prostitution. The community’s 41st police precinct consistently records the highest violent crime rate per capita in New York City. As a result, the area has a high rate of incarceration. Due to the lucrative drug trade in the area, many drug addicts reside in the community.
The majority of cases occur in minority groups, particularly recently arrived immigrants from countries with high endemicity who often congregate in deprived communities within wealthy cities. In the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, people from the Indian subcontinent and sub-Saharan Africa living in inner cities have higher rates of TB than the general population; particularly during the first years after arriving in the country, (WHO 2008). Within the developed world immigration is the greatest factor contributing to the increase in cases. In England 60% of cases are in ethnic minority groups, which comprise only 5% of the population. Of these individuals from the Indian Subcontinent form the majority, ( online ref), and one of the explanations attributed to this surged of tuberculosis in the capital of London is not only due to the intensification of immigrants living in the cities, but the living environments in which they find themselves , overcrowding, poorly ventilated housing, malnutrition, smoking, stress, social deprivation and poor social capital.
China’s Water Shortages China has the biggest population in the world at the moment, however it only supplies 7% of the World’s water supply. In the Capital, Beijing, there are many reasons why there is such a substantial shortage. These reasons can be separated into human factors and physical factors. As you can see from Source 8, there is a massive divide between the South of China and the North of China. The North of China houses 40% of the population.
More children are born in Britain today outside of marriage than in most other European countries. This has been linked to many explanations such as; poor education in sexual health and the lack of knowlege on different types of contraceptives. Nearly a quarter of children lived with only one parent (25%) last year and nine out of ten of these households were headed by mothers. Dennis and Erdos believe that is is down to most families being fatherless, meaning they automatically have poor health and lower educational attainment, however this is only one theory. Another main reason is the simple fact people are marrying later for many reasons, more because of the change in attitudes towards education and religion (seclurisation).
Favelas, known as slums in other parts of the world, are generally in very poor condition, with no water supply, plumbing or electricity. Spread of disease is common and often unavoidable, with poor sanitation putting the areas at risk to infestations from rats, for example. Overpopulation affects developed countries, as well as those which are developing. Portsmouth, a city in the Uk, is a prime example of this. Portsmouth has the highest population density of any city in Europe, estimated at 5100 people per square mile.
The damage in Canterbury is estimated at around $2billion. However Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world, and does not implement the same building codes that saved so many lives and buildings in the Canterbury earthquake. Well constructed and earthquake proof buildings are a rarity in Haiti. An estimate suggests that 250,000 homes were destroyed or severely damaged in Haiti, leaving nearly 1 million people homeless. A clear indication of how little resources and building training the people of Haiti had is shown in even
After doing the research, we realized that living in Jamaica would be entirely different than living in America. Aside from being a widely known vacation spot, Jamaica has many poverty stricken and slum areas. Jamaica is a 4,243 square mile island. It is in the Caribbean Sea, 90 miles south of Cuba ("Mobay"). With 2.8 million people, it is the third most populated English speaking country, after the United States and Canada.
Before any of these Acts were passed, the old system was corrupt in many ways, perhaps the biggest issue was the way members of parliament were elected. The two types of franchise were boroughs and counties. A lot of the boroughs at the time were considered, "Rotten Boroughs" where before the city was vastly populated, but over time for whatever reason the population had decreased, but there were still two MPs regardless of the size or population. An example of a borough such as this would be Old Sarum, where there were only three houses and a population of 15 people. As only a few of these could vote due to the varied voting qualification such as a man only being able to
In spite of many recent economical, political, and social achievements, Afghanistan is still ranked as the fourth poorest country in the world, according to the Afghanistan 2007 Human Development Report. One of two Afghans is classified as poor, with more than 20 percent of the rural population consuming less than the average daily calories. Historically, the drought of the nineties, the destruction of basic infrastructure, the damage to institutional organizations, and the scarcity of skilled professionals has been among the primary causes of poverty. Decades of war and foreign invasion has greatly impacted its political and social stance and essentially has destroyed its economy. Economic frailty and government dependence
