For a man raised in Japan, the charge of disloyalty is a disgrace. It was a humiliation. For the men, it brought them face to face with their own vulnerability. 2. The riot started when six men decided to beat up Fred Tayama, a leader in the Japanese American Citizens League, on December 5th. One of the six men was a young cook, well known for his defiance and contempt for the authorities. The young cook, as well as two other men, were arrested.
