His own family disapproved of it. The reason for that was because they knew it was going to be biased. There were too many risks in taking that case. He risks being criticized by the townsfolk in Maycomb. Miss Gates talks about how Hitler is evil for killing all the Jews, and how being prejudiced against someone for their religion is wrong, yet she is racist against black people. So, she is a hypocrite for saying it is wrong to judge someone by their religion, but it’s ok to judge black people for their colour. He relates it to himself in the context of racism towards him and his family and identifies it as the result of the white society of Maycomb not realizing that the black society is also human and equal. Throughout the book, the society in Maycomb is shown to be a very racist community, so racist that racism has been integrated into the culture of Maycomb. In this community, the black society is hated, and suppressed by the predominantly white society. Due to this, the black community is prejudiced against and does not ever get the chance to rise in society.

One example of this was the simple that no able bodied man was able to live in these projects along with their families. They were forced to struggle on their own to look for low-end jobs. This idea of the American family that consisted of a working father and a working mother clearly weren’t in affect here. It proved hurtful to the lifestyle of many African American families. As a women stated in the film, “The strong and tightly knit families I had grew up around had begun to shatter and it was one of the most tragic things I had seen”(Pruitt-Igoe).
Just as blacks in the south, they wanted equal rights. However, there was one major difference: there were no laws in the north pertaining to the black community. There were no political figures to fight. In the south, civil rights protestors had a battle laid out for them: they had the Jim Crow laws to deem unjust; they had the numerous bombings directed toward important black icons to protest.
