How did the Great Depression in the United States affect clothes trends in the 1930s? Abstract Each year, there are plenty of fashion shows everywhere in the world that tell people what types of styles and trends are going to be popular during the next season. I was always wondering why designers created these certain fads and asked myself if they could be related to some other factors. After doing some research, I found out that fashion trends could be affected by anything from a successful movie to a serious economic failure. Therefore, my research question is “how did the Great Depression in the United States affect clothes trends in the 1930s?” The scope of this investigation will be to analyze and explore how worldwide events affect fashion trends by examining the economic effects after the Great Depression in the United States and looking at the general and typical looks as well as detailed trends in fashion area. Women’s and men’s fashions, sportswear styles and the redesign of the zipper will be examined. The evening wear—backless gown—was one of the newest designs of the 1930s. Hats were the item that could show designers’ manipulations with fabrics. Black peed-toed and wedge heels were the main shoes types in the 1930s. An improved design of zipper was one of the technological changes in clothes construction during 1930s that took place of hook-and-eye to save more materials.
