British Columbia Institute of Technology, Canada. | Abstract Two different models of care for seniors with mental health issues and/or mental illness were examined; home care and hospitalization. The benefits of home care are greater independence, more choices about the type of care received, reduced pressure on inpatient services, reduced costs and ensuring consistent care. The benefits of hospitalization are ease of access to medical services and the security a hospital provides. The home care model provides the most benefits and highest quality of life. I believe resources should be shifted to a home care model for seniors with mental health issues. 1 Introduction The proportion of seniors in Canada is increasing more rapidly than any other age group. Many of these seniors are dealing with mental health issues such as declining cognitive abilities and minor depression and mental illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Issues of seniors mental health affect the individual as well as their families. Understanding how we as a society, are caring for these seniors who live with mental health issues is important. Currently seniors with mental health issues are either cared for as inpatients in hospitals or are cared for at home with the assistance of family members or community caregivers.
