Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was a Portuguese explorer and was famous for his exploration of the west coast of North America on behalf of Spain. Cabrillo was the first European explorer to navigate the coast of present day California.Not much is known about his early life, but Juan Rodriguez was born on 1499 in Castilla .Cabrillo served in the army of a famous conquistador Hernan Cortes, where he joined the conquest of Mexico and Guatemala. Cabrillo fought as a captain of crossbowmen in the battles between Aztecs and the Spanish. After the defeat of the Aztecs, Cabrillo joined different Spanish military expeditions in what today southern Mexico, Guatemala and San Salvador. By the 1530s Cabrillo established himself as a citizen of Santiago.
Dom Pedro was born on October 12, 1798 in the Queluz Royal Palace outside of Lisbon. He had parents that were both from royal lineage.When he was born Portugal was ruled by his Grandmother, Queen Maria I, even though her son, Pedro's father, had essentially ruled on behalf of her. Andy Lai 1/24/12 HIS 146 ESSAY 1 The history of Cuba was first documented with the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492 which was then colonized by the Spaniards during the 16th century. Since its colonization, Spanish Cuba’s economy had remained stagnant for centuries. The island’s economy comprised of pastoral pursuits and agriculture; the island of Cuba primarily served as a stopping point for the Spanish fleet in transit between Spain and the New World. A series of events that transpired during the 19th century had awakened Cuba’s economy dramatically. What was once just a mere stopping point for the Spanish fleet had now become the major sugar producer in the world during this time.
Late 15th C. Spain became united and due to the fact that the Portuguese controlled trade routes in Africa and Asia they looked west. Christopher Columbus, exploring in the name of Spain, discovered the Bahamas in 1492. Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) divided SA land between Spain and Portugal. Balboa discovered the Pacific Ocean while Magellan circumnavigated the globe. Leon explored Florida and Coronado explored Arizona and New Mexico.

William Russell, in source W, writes about the food supplies to the army, and how the army were being sufficiently fed and that perhaps the food shortages suggestions were supposedly untrue. Its views definitely differ from those shown in sources Y and W where they people talk about the lack of supplies of both food, and clothing, which they blame mostly down to the weather conditions. Source Y, which is a letter home from a doctor at the Crimea says the last two weeks supplies have been unable to reach the army which he blames for the ‘bad weather’. When the main character first started his long trip, he thought that it was cold, but didn’t think of anything particular about it except for scientific knowledge.
