Frequently dubbed the "Father of Soul," Charles amalgamated blues, gospel and jazz to produce revolutionary hits like Unchain My Heart, Hit the Road Jack, and Georgia on My Mind. He died in 2004, leaving behind a timeless feeling on contemporary music. Ray Charles Robinson was born on September 23, 1930, in Albany, Georgia. His father was a automobile mechanic, and his mother was a sharecropper, they peregrinate to Florida while Ray was still an infant.
Originally founded as the Primettes in Detroit, Michigan, in 1959, the Supremes' repertoire included doo-wop, pop, soul, Broadway show tunes, psychedelic soul, and disco. During the mid-1960s, the Supremes achieved mainstream success with Ross as lead singer. In 1967, Motown president Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross & the Supremes, and replaced Ballard with Cindy Birdsong. Ross left to pursue a solo career in 1970 and was replaced by Jean Terrell, at which point the group's name reverted to the Supremes. After 1972, the lineup changed more frequently; Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne, and Susaye Greene all became members of the group during the mid-1970s.

Motown and Soul artists of the 1960’s Motown was established by the former boxer and automobile worker Berry Gordy and the help of his friend songwriter Smokey Robinson, in January 1959 on Detroit, Michigan. After a few years Motown owned by African-American became a cultural icon by selling singles and hits more than any other record company. Motown sound were a mix of African-American church music, pop and jazz with songs full of joyous, sadness, romantic, mad and growing music. The first original Motown records label was TAMLA and the first recording was “Come to ME” by Marv Johnson on January 1959 on TAMLA 101. The second Motown label is “Bad Girl” by The Miracles in September 1959.

African American Music History FROM SLAVE FIELDS TO RAP SKILLS: A Journey Through Black American Music The Africans brought with them sounds of their ancestors as they came ashore to this country. Polyrhythms and work songs were parts of their heritage. As slaves labored in the fields, the music became a way of adapting to a new language, a new religion and a new, but difficult way of life. Often times the songs were a means for them to communicate with each other and express their troubles and hopes for a better life. It has also been said that some songs were used to signal the flight to freedom.
