Joe Savino BHS 242 Mrs. Greer 10/17/13 Extra Credit #1 Drug addiction is an ongoing problem throughout the United States. It is unfortunate how many people have this negatively impact their lives because of a drug addiction. The documentary I chose to watch, regarding this topic, is titled High on Crack Street: Lost Lives in Lowell. For those not familiar with Lowell it is a city in Massachusetts about thirty miles northwest of Boston. During the time of the filming Lowell was a very depressing town to be around. It experienced a lot of hard times since the mills left the city in the 1920s. Much of the film is taken place in the lower-class section of the city. The documentary does not focus on just one person, but rather three…show more content…
“The saddest thing in life is wasted talent.” Dicky Ward was a onetime proud boxer who fought Sugar Ray Leonard. He took the great Sugar Ray Leonard to 10 rounds and lost by decision. He became the pride of Lowell. Think about this statement. “A once proud boxer ruins his career because of a drug addiction.” Tragic? I think so. Why a man with such a unique gift would throw it away because of drugs is beyond me. I do not know anyone that would not want Dicky’s talent. Dicky attempts a comeback but unfortunately fails because of his drug addiction. He tries to prevent his habit and all of the crimes he commits because of it throughout the documentary. Unfortunately this once proud boxer cannot stay clean when he attempts to. He is arrested on multiple occasions for violent behavior. He always talks about how he could have been a legitimate contender in the sport of boxing if he continued to train and stayed clean. He steals in order to support his drug addiction. During the film he is arrested for the twenty-seventh time, yes the twenty-seventh time, and faces a long prison sentence. The saddest part about his story is not the fact that he was once a talented up and coming boxer, but he was a father to young son. The saddest part for me during the film was seeing him playing with his son before his sentencing. I truly…show more content…
It can easily take over a person’s life, as I witnessed in High on Crack Street: Lost Lives in Lowell with Boo Boo, Brenda, and Dicky. I saw three people become controlled by a drug addiction. The three truly did not want to steal but they felt the need to because of their addiction. Boo Boo was portrayed as harmless individual but needed to steal to get money for drugs. The most noticeable for moment displaying how serious their drug addictions were was when I witnessed Brenda going through a withdrawal because her body was craving the drug. Seeing her inject drugs into her body is still difficult to process in my mind. Watching Dicky was equally as sad because of the possible career he threw away because of a drug addiction. All three people have very sad stories. Unfortunately Brenda passed away and Boo Boo still supports his drug addiction by stealing. Thankfully Dicky appears to be on the right path. I recommend that people watch this documentary. It is a powerful and many times a difficult film to watch. The director definitely made his point clear to me. Being controlled by drugs is a terrible way to live life. It can completely change a person and make him or her perform actions that would be uncharacteristic of them, as we saw in the film. I hope anyone who watches this documentary is as moved and as sad I was during the entirety of the
