Hector St. John de Crevecoeur vs. Arthur Schlesinger Jr. In comparing the writings of Hector St. John de Crevecoeur What is an American, and Arthur Schlesinger The Cult of Ethnicity, Good and Bad you find that even though both writers focused there writings around diversity and culture they are both sharing two different views on the topic of diversity among people in America. The two writers lived 186 years apart from one another. The time difference causes the writers to see thing in a different perspective, due to the world event going on around them at that particular time. Both had strong feelings on Americas mixing of culturs, religions and beliefs. Both men seem to come from good backgrounds and are university educated. When reading any writing is always a good idea to do a little research on the writer, that way you know from what point of view the writing is coming from. This could be why a particular piece on the same topic could have two different views. The difference in education and in the writer’s background history comes into play with the writings of Crevecoeur and Schlesinger. Crevecoeur was born in Normandy in 1731. He was educated in England and immigrated to America in 1754, at the age of 23. Settling in New York Crevecoeur married an American merchant’s daughter. In few years later he had to make an emergency trip back over seas and was arrested under false pretence of being a spy and stayed in prison for 3 months. When returning to New York Crevecoeur found his house burned, farm ravaged, children missing and his wife dead. Crevecoeur worked as a solider, farmer and a government official. Besides the well educated similarities the two come from two different types of lives. Crevecoeur seems to have had more life experience behind him. Schlesinger coming from a more sheltered life, not seeing life out side of America or experiencing prison
