Healthy eating and nutrition Task 1 MU2.8 4.1 Carbohydrates provide our main energy supply for the body to help keep you and your organs functioning. They help to regulate blood sugar levels, prevent use of protein for energy as it is important for other functions, they give the feeling of full which is important for weight control and they help protect against heart diseases. They are found in foods such as cereal, bread, flour, rice, pasta, potatoes and cereal. Protein in our diet builds new cells, maintains tissue and helps regulate cell function. It converts into enzymes to help digest food. It is found in foods such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese, nuts and soy. Oils and fats are essential in our diet for good health. They aid in energy production, cell building, oxygen transport throughout the body, blood clotting and the production of active hormone like substances called prostaglandins. Unsaturated fats are found in olive and canola oils. saturated fats are found in animal products such as butter, cheese, milk, cream, ice cream, fatty meats and also some oils such as coconut and palm. Polyunsaturated fats are found in sunflower, corn and soybean oils. Vitamin A is found in liver, carrots, sweet potatoes , orange and yellow fruits and dark leafy greens. It promotes growth of healthy teeth and bones and helps form a pigment that helps you see in dim light. vitamin B is found in whole grains, liver, meat, poultry, dark leafy greens, fish, eggs, nuts and seeds. It helps the body use energy and aids metabolism. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant in the body but it is water soluble so is quickly lost. It is found in peppers, oranges, carrots, cabbage, tomatoes and potatoes. Vitamin D is produced when the body is exposed to sunlight and is also found in foods of animal origin.
