Unit 4222-305 Explain how and why person centred values must influence all aspects of health and social care work. Person centred care is about providing care and support that is centred or focused on the individual and their needs. We are all individual and just because two people might have the same medical condition, for example, Dementia and/or learning/physical disabilities, it doesn’t mean that they require or want the same level of care and support. We will need to develop a clear understanding about the individuals we are working with. This includes their needs, their culture, their means of communication, their likes and dislikes, their family and other professionals’ involvement in order that we can promote and provide person centred care and support to the individual. This is a lawful requirement under the Human Rights Act 1998, Health and Social care Act 2012, and Codes of practice for Social Care Workers. Person centre values are a holistic approach and should involve not only the physical needs of the individual but the spiritual, emotional and social needs as well. Also finding out any goals and expectations of the individual. These values should underpin all work in the health and social care sector when they are followed as they should be then all individuals should be able to feel that, and health and social workers should ensure that: all individuals are treated with dignity and respect the individual is supported in accessing their rights the individual is treated as an individual the individual is supported to exercise choice ensure that the individual has privacy when they want it support the individual to be as independent as possible Person centred values provide a foundation on which we can base and build our practice. We need to understand what the values are, how we can promote them and why they are important. A
