Demographic Paper HCS/490 October 24, 2011 Mr. Michael Veal Demographic Paper In today’s economy troubles and with many children coming from homes with divorced, single, or separated families, will not receive the proper health care they need. The affordability of health care is highly determined by the income of the parent(s) and in most cases, most single, separated, and single parents do not have adequate income to provide dependent health care coverage. With the rise of children being born with disabilities and parent’s being laid off, the federal government stepped in to assist with dependents receiving proper health care. With the continue arguments on health care coverage for all citizens, all debaters agree that for children, health care is essential and critical. With uninsured children not receiving the properly preventive care (dental, medical, etc.), they have to rely of emergency room care as a usual source of care. In 2008, a published study estimated the cost of expanding health care insurance coverage for children in 2009 would be $9.6 billion. Research continues to provide evidence that providing health care insurance for children will return improvements in the health of the children which will lead to increased productivity in adulthood. Upfront costs of health care insurance are minimal and can get offset by the value increased health capital gained in the future. It is difficult to determine what type of coverage the country would need to help improve the current lack of coverage for children.
