Gun control has come to the front of the debate with the mass shootings that continue to happen throughout the nation. Many people have formed opinions on gun control, causing the debate to become complicated with strong supporters on both sides. Gun control has been one of the biggest topics facing our nation.
Every single day someone dies here in America due to guns, whether it is by suicide, school shootings, or just even children playing around at home with an open gun at home. (Truth is we need laws and systems like this). It is a way we can reduce the number of killings by guns in our country that happen on an everyday basis. Although the individuals in the class may not have suicidal thoughts, there are many other people who do have to endure a daily struggle of debating whether or not to take their own life away. Whether we believe it or not, our youth is killing themselves and the leading way is by guns.
In-forced Gun Restrictions Everyone has seen movies where guns are shown to kill people, or crazy people shooting everyone in a room with a weapon. Unfortunately, that kind of behavior is not only seen in movies. Today, the topic of gun control and ownership of private guns has been one of the most controversial issues. Lately, there have been many cases where there were gun shootings. For example, Friday December 14, there was a tragic shooting at Sandy Hook elementary school in Connecticut.

Kimberly Torres Mr. Harrer ERWC 20 November 2014 Gun Violence in Our Nation The history of gun violence has long been a very big issue, Since guns were first introduced to civilians there have been countless homicides from guns and centuries later the issue is still being resolved. According to the article Gun Violence In America: The 13 Key Questions (With 13 Concise Answers), “there are 30,000 deaths per year from gun violence; many of those deaths could’ve been prevented.” (Jonathon Stray). “Homicide is the second leading cause of death for people 15-24 years old and innocent kids are losing their lives because of gun violence.”(Stray). Law enforcements are supposed to ensure the safety of the citizens but with so many guns on the streets it is impossible to keep guns from getting into the wrong hands. However, there are many strategies that can be used to prevent gun violence like: passing gun laws and enforcing them, spreading information about gun violence, and performing thorough background checks.
Researchers at Harvard studies the relationship between firearm availability and the deaths of children 5-14 years old. Out of that age group, 6,817 children were killed by firearms between 1988 and 1997. They also found out that death rates were highest in states where firearms were most accessible. Every so often a story will pop up on the news saying, “Kid shoots dad” or “Child accidentally shoots himself. Whats the easiest way to have stories like these stop popping up?
TV news creates a false picture of a country under attack by rampaging criminals, and especially nonwhite criminals. The people who watch the most TV news, Americans older than 50, also happen to be the group most likely to own a gun. Only one-fifth of young Americans own a gun; one-third of over-50 Americans do. Republicans are twice as likely to own a gun as Democrats. Maybe not so coincidentally, Republicans are more likely to watch the scariest news channel of them all: Fox.
