When most people think of Goodwill, they think of a place to donate unwanted personal items that will then be resold in the Goodwill store, which is typically frequented by people on little or fixed incomes. Goodwill Industries is a perfect example of a nonprofit service organization that is continuously adding services to their offerings, for both revenue and betterment of the community. Rev. Edgar J. Helms, a Methodist minister, founded Goodwill in 1902 in Boston, MA. (Goodwill, n.d.). According to Goodwill (n.d.): Dr. Helms collected used household goods and clothing in wealthier areas of the city, then trained and hired unemployed people to mend and repair the used goods. The author works at a major U.S. Air Force installation located in middle Georgia, known as Robins AFB. The entire base currently contracts Goodwill Industries of Middle Georgia, Inc., doing business as Good Vocations, to administer and execute all custodial, or janitorial, duties on the base. This is one example of how Goodwill is hiring individuals with little skills and putting them to work in the service industry, which has helped the community.
