Bethany Vogt 10/24/12 8th Comparison Essay The story of the great flood is known by many lands, but each version presents similar and different details than the other. Two tales of this historically significant happening includes, “The Story of the Flood” from the Epic of Gilgamesh and “Noah and the Flood” from Genesis. These two stories revolve around a single hero trying to save mankind and fauna from extinction. However, the stories have details that differ and give each version its own uniqueness. With each story, a new tale is unraveled and differences are put aside to reveal an event that was beyond human control. Beginning in both stories, the reader is introduced to the hero that saves all creatures from extinction. These men are ordered by a single god to build an arc, full of the beasts of the land and particular people in which the god wishes to save. These large arcs are build using pitch to keep water from leaking in, and include only one door and one hatch opening. When the arcs are finished, the floods are delivered by rain and wipe out the remaining population of land creatures. When the rain has subsided, the heroes then release birds to find a resting place, and within days, after releasing doves, the birds do not return. Despite coming from separate lands, both tales explore the story of a happening that none bear witness to. Though so different, the heroes are known for their courageous act to save all creatures and follow the words of their god. In this act, there are details that shall not be confirmed if true or not, but still give the stories their grand events. With each story, there are many points to explore, but all the same, this tale is a tale which continues to be a widely known and famous
