Many people can argue between the Epic of Gilgamesh’s Flood story and the Bible’s Flood story. Their similarities are very much alike and could make anybody wonder which story to believe. They have few differences but their stories run along the same line. They compare and contrast in the duration of the flood, the reason for the flood and the amount of people they were allowed to bring into their ship. With each story, a new tale is unraveled and differences are put aside to reveal an event that was beyond human control. Beginning in both stories, the reader is introduced to the hero that saves all creatures from extinction. These men are ordered by a single god to build an arc, full of the beasts of the land and particular people in which the god wishes to save. These large arcs are build using pitch to keep water from leaking in, and include only one door and one hatch opening. When the arcs are finished, the floods are delivered by rain and wipe out the remaining population of land creatures.

What most people don’t realize is that the beginning of the story can mean everything. This sets up the basis of what the story is about, what the main conflict is, who the main characters are, and how to solve their problem. There are three creation stories that I’ve read and in them I’ve found some very similar characteristics. They are named “The World on the Turtle’s Back”, “Genesis”, and “The Metamorphoses”.
Two particular cultures condemned this behavior by way of their stories of a worldwide flood. The Hebrew story of Noah and the Arck tells how all of humanity was wiped out, and that only the most faithful man and his family would be saved. The flood story in The Epic of Gilgamesh follows the same plot line. Both stories share so many elements, it would be safe to say that the originated from a common work, but the minute differences reflect the values of their different cultures of origin.
