Deets Getting to the Goal Developing goals and sticking with those goals helps to achieve success. According to Hills (2011), “effective goal setting is an important practice management tool and personal development strategy that many individuals credit for their success” (p. 159). Many people develop goals in their professional and personal lives; starting with a short- term goal and leading into a long-term goal. In setting these goals, I will determine the skills needed to achieve my goal, the milestones I will need to accomplish, what barriers I may run into, and how I will overcome those barriers. Currently, I work as a registered nurse, part time in a skilled nursing facility and rehabilitation unit. The title I hold in my current position is charge nurse. As a charge nurse, I can direct and manage the licensed vocational nurses and the certified nursing assistants who work under me. My short-term goal in my current job is to obtain a full-time position with benefits. In order to be a suitable candidate for a full-time position, I need to possess such skills as being flexible with my schedule, reliability, being accountable for my actions, being on time, motivated, and ready to work with a positive attitude. To be able to achieve this position, the milestones I am working on are to be more involved with team participation, and effective communication with my coworkers. I will attend the licensed staff meetings and performance improvement meetings, and will provide my input at these meetings to help better our organization. Once achieving my short-term goal of obtaining a full-time position, I will continue to work toward and achieve my long-term goal of becoming a lead charge nurse. The skills needed to obtain a position as lead charge nurse requires experience, organization, leadership, critical thinking skills, good judgment, and fair decision making. My personal goals are extremely important to me in providing for my family and making my life complete. I will be well rounded and fully educated. Recently, I decided to go back to school and work toward my ultimate goal of becoming a nurse practitioner in women’s health. I have made myself a student at University of Phoenix to get started. Completing my bachelors of nursing is my short-term goal that I will accomplish through the University of Phoenix. The skills needed to accomplish my short-term goal are self–motivation, organization, time management, good study habits, computer skills, and writing skills. Milestones for accomplishing my short-term goal are to effectively navigate my way around the University of Phoenix student website. Comfort in the online setting will allow me to pass the classes required for my degree. Once completing my bachelors of science in nursing, I can continue my long-term goal of becoming a nurse practitioner. The skills required of a nurse practitioner are skills that I have been practicing throughout my career as a nurse. I will listen to my patient’s needs and concerns, and provide them with information in a way they can understand it. I will have better critical thinking and reasoning skills for when problems or situations arise. I will have the knowledge and information needed to diagnose and treat.
