‘In the name of the father’ Freedom is looked at differently by every individual; it has a different meaning to all of us. Freedom to most of us means free to act, speak and make decisions without hesitation. Depending on the spirituality ,beliefs or political and social surroundings it has a significant meaning to each human being . ‘In the name of the father’ showed us how easily freedom can be taken away from an individual regardless of the consequence and how it was portrayed against others. The way the movie set its camera angles, use of colour, and introduced the main characters had a large impact on the way freedom was explored throughout the film. The first few scenes show the long journey the characters were going to face throughout the movie. The first major scene shows Gerry Conlon mistaken for having a shipper and is a trigger for the IRA and sets off a large riot involving the people of Belfast. This simply shows us how fast the IRA and the Irish reacted to the situation. Starting a riot which showed us that they have a strong hate for the British army because of the control they have on Belfast and the freedom they lack. Gerry Conlon and three others are then convicted of bombing the Gilford pub when the police invaded the Conlon’s house and took him away in the middle of the night to the station where they interrogate Gerry and torture him about the bombing. Gerry is sat in the middle of the room with a spotlight on him making him feel small and helpless compared to the police, there are dull colours and the use of lighting creates the mood. During that scene there is an irrelevant part where police officers are carrying a birthday cake representing happiness and doing things at their leisure. This scene really showed the power that the police had over Gerry and how easily his freedom was taken away from him in just a couple of hours. Gerry was
