The aim of the brief was to create an educational quiz game for based on Sherlock Holmes. The coursework specification was designed for Portsmouth City Council Arthur Conan Doyle Collection (www.conandoylecollection.co.uk) and the client was required to construct the game in Flash ActionScript 3.0, an object-oriented programming, (OOP) language based on ECMAScript, similar to JavaScript. Creating a Sherlock avatar to walk down a Victorian street was a requirement for the game. At four separate points, a subgame is launched where he can ‘investigate’ a basic fact about Conan Doyle. Research on Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes and the Victorian Era was needed in order to create consistent realism and to produce a well-constructed game that prospective clients, mainly pre adolescents and teenagers, can learn from. Flash Actionscript is a challenging concept to those who have not programmed before and this was my first attempt at creating a realistic program using this tool. Through support from the tutors and the tools available, a game was implemented that fulfilled the basic requirements. The game begins with an opening ‘Welcome’ page to establish the game that, through the use of a button, leads onto a clear instruction page. From there, a button then takes you onto the main game where an animated Sherlock, controlled by keyboard arrows, moves around a Victorian style street and launches into subgames as he hits each of the four logos. Each page and game generated was created on different scenes and linked together through the use of a buttons. The Sherlock Holmes avatar can be seen with his legs moving which was created using the ‘tween’ motion tool. The Animation and Scripting practical’s proved useful as a similar technique was shown and used when creating South Park characters, making it simple and easy to build upon in order to create Sherlock
