Instrumental values are the preferable ways of behaving; it is conditioned by the expected results. Gavin wants to own a yacht, a terminal value. Gavin would have to behave a certain way (i.e. being ambitious, taking risks, being responsible for actions, etc.) that will lead him to financial success and ability to own a yacht. I disagree with the above statement. Values are formed when we are young through experiences and interactions with society. What one may deem as materialistic or perhaps unethical, as presented in the above statement, may be warranted for the particular upbringing, socio-economic status, cultural, and other factors in which the individual grew up in. The thinking of Confucius is the underpinning of Chinese society and forms the moral compass. Confucianism has taught me that there are defined gender roles where men are to provide financial support for the family and women are to be obedient and supportive. In addition, Confucianism also stressed on family; members of the family are to help each other and not fight for positions, enforced by the defined gender roles. Having emigrated from China to Canada, where overnight my parents became middle-class to near the poverty line, seeking financial stability has been a huge part of my childhood. Compare this with my friends born into the upper-middle class, they are more concerned about equality and social issues than money. Also, their Western upbringing compels them to pursue
