The NEC developed these five steps from evidence gathered in the UK government’s foresight project on mental capital and wellbeing ( neweconomics n.d ). It is now used worldwide in schools, health organisations and community projects. The five steps are simple activities that everyone can do in everyday life to promote their own wellbeing. The first of the five steps is connecting, it is good for us to make connections with others and do something different. Strong evidence indicates that feeling close to, and valued by other people is a human need, when we connect we achieve social wellbeing which is important when it comes to total health and wellbeing.

SHC 32: Engage in personal development in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings 2.1 Reflective practice is extremely important as it lets me reflect on my actions and experiences in my workplace and where I can improve my quality of service. It is important to observe the children at all times but personally I find it really useful to reflect on practice during role play especially when new role play equipment is being used, this lets me see how they react and I can make changes and improve where necessary. On the other hand this gives me the opportunity to look at my own learning needs and gives me a greater understanding of how things can be made better and therefore be able to help others in an appropriate way.
