The main goals for indeterminate sentencing are the prevention of new crimes, rehabilitation, and to protect the criminals from excessive, unequal, or random punishments. According to the U.S. Department of Justice (1999), Indeterminate sentencing allows corrections managers to deal with problems of overcrowding or with changes in resource allocation by adjusting policies governing award of good time, setting of parole release dates, or releasing offenders on furloughs or to intermittent or partial confinement (p. 5). Third before a trial begins the judge gives the jury instructions about the law and how the laws apply to the case. Fourth during a bench trial the judge must determine the facts and decide the case. The fifth task is to sentence convicted criminals.

The punishment is to ensure that the offender is adequately punished for the offence. The punishment is to prevent the crime by deterring the offender and other persons from committing similar offences. In other words the punishment needs to be severe enough to make the offender not want to reoffend. The punishment is to protect the community from the offender by keeping them off the street, and trying to reconcile if this person wants to change for the better, in essence to also promote the rehabilitation option to the offender which could help denounce the conduct of the offender, but ultimately for the offender to recognize the harm done to the victim of the crime and the community.
Herbert Packer mentioned two values inherent in the Criminal Justice System; The crime control model and the due process model. Which model do you prefer, and why? The Crime Control Model and the Due Process Model both intend to serve a similar purpose: To reduce crime and protect the public. The crime control model places emphasis on reducing the crime in society through increased police and prosecutional powers. The criminal process exists to investigate crimes, screen suspects, detain dangerous defendants, and secure convictions of guilty parties.
In contrast, the due process model emphasizes "protecting the rights of the accused through formal, legal restraints on the police, courts, and corrections" (Gaines). Under the due process model, the same case would face would be put under a microscope and carefully examined; every piece of evidence, every witness testimony would be scrutinized in order to ensure a fair trial is delivered.
