Brown, SPHR August 21, 2011 Employee Performance: First Day on the Job Discuss the factors causing the employee’s dissatisfaction. There may be several factors causing the employee’s dissatisfaction. The most immediate appears to be burnout. By indicating she was planning on quitting her job because she felt exhausted and frustrated, she displayed typical symptoms of worker burnout. She characterized her problems as resulting from either too much or too little work at various times. She was not excited about her job and did not feel it was challenging or contributing to her professional growth. When individuals are burnt out they feel overextended and emotionally drained, indifferent toward work, and have lowered expectations of continued effectiveness (Stewart, 2009 Custom Edition). All of these elements were mention or implied by the employee. A second factor could be a failure by the firm to allow her access to a career development program targeted at women. Part of her frustration has to do with a lack of skill development. Identify which of these factors could be addressed with improvements in the way the organization handles development as described in the chapter. Burnout can be reduced by being clear about job expectations, offering support and providing employees with the opportunity to help make decisions about their work. In the narrative, the worker dissatisfaction with the varying work load would indicate she did not have input about her workload schedule. A better job of monitoring employees for stress could be implemented. The employee’s first interaction with a new supervisor should not be an announcement of quitting. Her concerns should have been identified and addressed earlier through effective monitoring or interaction with
