The relationship between Jig and the American is complex as it is hard to figure out where they are since they are traveling together. Analysis shall try to show what type of relationship really exists between these two people. The story told is that of a woman and a man on a trip to a place where she can have an abortion. Everything in the story is related to the idea of fertility. This main topic can be seen from the title Hills Like White Elephants, where hills refer to the shape of the belly of a pregnant woman, and white elephant is the fetus they are going to get rid of. The story begins at the train station in a bar where they have a conversation about the shape of the hills. The story happens in Spain, and we see the characters are going to take an express train that comes from Barcelona and goes to Madrid, but we don’t know exactly where they are or the time era, in which it takes place, we don’t know if they really take the train. The train symbolizes change, movement but in was they are scared of it as movement is not always forward but it can also be backwards in this case in their relationship. It is the “train of life” (David Gagne, 2001). Another thing we must take into account is the fact that the train is stopping only for a short time and Jog has not made up her mind about the decision to abort. The longer time period she waits has risks on her life, the abortion is not legal and in the time era it had to be done before it was noticeable. The conversation they have will deduce the kind of relationship they have. The language is very simple as it is expressing feelings about the unwanted pregnancy and love. “It tastes like licorice,” the girl said and put the glass down. “That’s the way with everything.” “Yes,” said the girl. “Everything tastes of licorice. Especially all the things you’ve waited so long
