Sherriff makes the relationship between Raleigh and Stanhope a memorable and significant part of the play through a variety of means. Their first meeting provides us with an insight into this. When Stanhope first sees Raleigh, it is made memorable by his actions. He ‘stops short and the sight of Raleigh’. This is memorable as it shows his shock towards having Raleigh in his company. This is further echoed by the fact that he, ‘stares at Raleigh as though dazed.’ It is obvious that Stanhope is in shock, but is it because of the fact that he is meeting his friend after three years? We are told in the play that Raleigh’s sister used to be Stanhope’s girlfriend. This is significant as Stanhope thinks that Raleigh will write home telling her how he is a drunkard. This explains Stanhope’s cool and unwelcoming attitude. Moreover, we can assume that Stanhope’s life before the war was good. Raleigh’s arrival can symbolise Stanhope’s lost life. This play could be seen as a parody of the officer/ upper class. In the play, the three characters that represent this are Osborne, Raleigh and Stanhope. If we look at the first meeting between Stanhope and Raleigh we can see that there is an obvious awkwardness between them. This is shown by the stage directions – ‘There is a silence.’ This is significant as if they can’t get on with people of their own class then how will they get on with the soldiers. This unfriendly attitude of Stanhope continues when Raleigh comes to post a letter. This part is memorable as we witness Stanhope shouting at Raleigh. We also see physical aggression towards Raleigh, ‘Tears the letter from his hand.’ This echoes the above points that Stanhope doesn’t want Raleigh to be here as he reminds him of his lost life. It’s memorable as we see physical aggression towards Raleigh and significant as Stanhope doesn’t want somebody from his own class to be there.
