SEXUAL ABUSE: is when a person is forced or tricked into taking part in any kind of sexual activity. When sexual contact is non- consensual, it is an abuse. It can happen to men and women of any age that is both old and young. Activities such as showing pornographic material, forcing the person to watch sex acts or forcing the person to undress are considered sexual abuse. EMOTIONAL ABUSE: when a person gains power and control over another person through words and gestures.
• Dehydration or unexplained weight changes or medication being lost. • Behaviour that indicates that the person is afraid or avoiding the perpetrator. • Change of behavior. Sexual Abuse • Sexually transmitted diseases or pregnancy. • Tears or bruises in genital/anal areas.
Sexual abuse can also take a verbal form for example talking to an individual in a sexual mano against their will. Emotional/psychological Abuse - To cause a person emotional pain, stress, anguish, angst or strain. Financial Abuse - To exploit anindividual ofwhat mony or valubles are rightfully theirs, steel from them or devieve them were mony and valubles are concernd. Institutional Abuse - taking individualty away from a person in an institution by denying them the right to make choices about their own life for example. In a nursing home there is such a fixed routine that service users are unable to choose what they eat, when they eat, when they drink, what times of the day they are assisted to the toilet.
Also if they are unable to take care of themselves or cannot protect themselves against significant harm or exploitation. This means that some adults are less able to protect themselves as they may have difficulty expressing themselves, creating an easy target to an abuser. Abuse is defined as a ‘violation of an individuals human and civil rights by any other person or persons’. There are many different types of abuse: Physical Abuse - an act of another person or persons involving contact intended to cause the feeling of physical injur, or other physical suffering or bodily harm. Sexual Abuse - an assault of a sexual nature on another person, or any sexual act in which a person is threatened, coerced, or forced to engage again their will, or any sexual touching of a person who has not consented.
* Financial abuse- Financial abuse is the theft or misuse of an individual’s money or personal possessions to the advantage of another person. * Institutional abuse- Institutional abuse is the mistreatment or abuse of an individual by a regime or people within an institution. This type of abuse usually occurs when the routines, systems and norms of an institution override the needs of the people that they are there to support. * Self-neglect- Self neglect is where the individual is failing to adequately care for themselves and is failing to meet their own basic needs for food, warmth, rest, medical care, and personal

HSC 024 1.1 Abuse is the improper usage or treatment for a bad purpose, often to unfairly or improperly gain benefit. Physical abuse: It can be described as hitting, burning or scalding, suffocating, force feeding, throwing. Emotional abuse: bullying, invoking threats or fear, devaluing individual self-esteem, verbal abuse and swearing, imposing inappropriate expectations, conveying feelings of worthlessness, exploitation.
Sexual abuse by a partner/intimate can include derogatory name calling, refusal to use contraception, deliberately causing unwanted physical pain during sex, without consent and to cause pain or humiliation. Emotional Abuse : One definition of emotional abuse is: "any act including confinement, isolation, verbal assault, humiliation, intimidation, infantilization, or any other treatment which may diminish the sense of identity, dignity, and self-worth Institutional abuse : Institutional abuse is the mistreatment of people brought about by poor or inadequate care or support, or systematic poor practice that affects the whole care setting. It occurs when the individual's wishes and needs are sacrificed for the smooth running of a group, service or organisation Self Neglect : Self-neglect is any failure of an adult to take care of himself or herself that causes, or is reasonably likely to cause within a short period of time, serious physical, mental or emotional harm or substantial damage to or loss of assets. Neglect by others : Adults are neglected when a caregiver does not provide the essential daily living needs of an adult dependent upon them, for things such as food, clothing, shelter, bathing, medication, health care, and doctor visits. Self-neglect happens when an adult can no longer take care of their own basic daily living needs.
