ESSAY – GARY CHANGES James Yucel Intro: The novel ‘Deadly Unna?’ by Phillip Gwynne is a coming of age novel set in a small coastal town in South Australia. The main character ‘Gary ‘Blacky’ Black’ is a teenager dealing with the pressures of an abusive father and events within his community. Throughout this essay I will be talking about some of the many aspects of Gary’s life such as not fitting in, Gary avoiding attention and how Gary changes. BP 1: Initially Gary tries to avoid attention. An example of this would be when he does not want to be first ruck. He tries to do this by He doesn’t have many friends which becomes apparent throughout the book. He only seems to hang out with Pickles and Dumby Red. He says no because it is looked down upon in his society to be friends with the Nunga’s. At this point in the story he is shown not showing everyone his true personality rather conforming to what other people think he should be like. BP 3: Eventually the circumstances that Gary is placed in forces him to finally resist what he is told to do. A reason that forces Gary to resist is Dumby’s death. It has a big impact on him because it was his only real friend and the fact that someone who he knows very well was the cause of his death. One very obvious show of Gary resisting is standing up to his father. This happens very late in the book. BP 4: I think Gary achieves a lot throughout this novel. He is first seen as a person who does what other people tell him to do even though he may not agree with it.
