What makes The Odyssey an epic? An epic is a long narrative poem telling of a hero's deeds. To explain, epic hero, epic plots, epic settings, archetypes, and epic themes will be explained to help better understand why The Odyssey is called an epic poem. For The Odyssey to be an epic poem it has to have an epic hero. The epic hero in The Odyssey would definitely be Odysseus. Odysseus is the epic hero because he is the main character faced with all kinds of crazy challenges and comes out victorious. For example, in Book 9: New Coasts and Poseidon`s Son, Odysseus and his men are heading home from Troy and get stuck on an island with many Cyclops. All of the men and Odysseus get locked up, but Odysseus derives a plan to escape, blinding the Cyclops that captured them, which proves to be victorious. An archetype is characters, situations, and images that are recognizable in many times and cultures. For example, throughout the books every battle the crew goes through, Odysseus represents an epic hero by being crafty and victorious. For example in Book 9: New Coasts and Poseidon`s Son, Odysseus told the Cyclops that his name was Nohbdy so that when they stabbed his eye he would say Nohbdy is killing me and the other Cyclops wouldn’t worry. In the end, when leaving, he yells out his name in a proud victory. Another archetype that is displayed throughout the books is the suitors contest. The contest Penelope holds between the suitors to see who can string the bow and make a shot through all the axe heads like Odysseus could. The winner would get her hand in marriage. Of course, none of them could even string the bow, until the beggar came, which was really Odysseus disguised. He then kills all the suitors. How this scene is detailed with gore creates an image in my mind through the rest of the books when anything about death comes
