Briana Period 5 Beowulf Essay The Great and Mighty Beowulf sailed his way to Hrothgar’s kingdom to help fight off vengeful beast terrorizing his kingdom, little did he know of the adventures ahead of him. Each battle he fought glorified his strength and being. For Beowulf opening up one door always meant a new quest. From dragons to sea witches Beowulf’s fought for the greater good of his people. Through out his battles the great and mighty Beowulf not only grew physically, but at mind as well.
Killian Stanley Syntax Aylmer Battle of the Suitors The battle between Odysseus and his wife’s (Penelope) suitors began when Odysseus gave his son, Telemachus, the signal. The two then drew swords and spears. Odysseus who is disguised as an old beggar sheds his rags and takes position at the entrance of the hall. The first suitor to be killed is Antinous, one of the leading suitors. He receives a spear to the neck.
In his quest, Odysseus uses his superior and super human strength to overcome the suitors. In The Odyssey, Penelope holds a contest for all the suitors. She declares that she will marry the one who can string and shoot Odysseus's bow through all the twelve axes. None of the suitors were able to bend the bow and string it. Odysseus disguised as a beggar then asks if he can try the bow.
Sigurd was a towering man, with unbeatable strength, astuteness, and agility; he defeats Fafnir to obtain his notoriety. In Theseus’ quest for glory, he overcomes the Minotaur of Crete, using his wit and strength. The cultures from which Sigurd and Theseus originate from differ in several ways, and their character qualities are unlike as well. Theseus demonstrates greater courage, for he seeks danger by volunteering to travel to Crete, in hopes of slaying the vicious Minotaur to attain fame. Sigurd, on the other hand, needs decisive convincing by Regin, before he dares confront Fafnir.
A hero is a mythological or legendary figure of great strength or ability. In the book Mythology by Edith Hamilton Odysseus is a the king of Ithaca island and as forced to go fight in the Trojan War, and on his journey back home he went many challenges and discovered new things. In the book Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter is a young wizard who was mysteriously entered into the Triwizard Tournament and had to go trough some hard challenges to prove that he to can be a champion. Odysseus and Harry Potter represent the idea hero archetype because they are both brave and selfless, and although the hero archetype has changed over time they are both still looked up to as role models from their society. Odysseus is a perfect match to the hero archetype from his time period because of the bravery that he portrays through out his journey and the selflessness he has towards others.
He is finally able to make meaningful use of his heroic abilities when he gets the call for adventure. The first call is made evident when Beowulf hears of the troubles in the hall of Heorot in Denmark. An angry beast by the name Grendel has been entering the hall in the middle of the night and taking the lives of many men. The hero’s acceptance to this adventure is purely willingly because Hrothgar, the king of Denmark, once did a favor for Beowulf’s father. The second call for adventure comes from Grendel’s mother who is seeking revenge for the death of her son.
No one can compare to him or his strength. Which hero you know that can rip a monster, named Grendel, arm off with their bare hands. Kill the monsters’ mother by cutting her head off. And that’s not even all. They were underwater at that when he cut her head off with a sword made by giants.
Fernando Chino Mr. Bayer GRENDWULF The epic poem, Beowulf, told a story of an invincible hero who travels the sea to fight villains in the 11th century. His most infamous foe was the terrible Grendel. This inhuman abomination was huge creature with the ability to crush human bones and tear ligaments in the blink of an eye. They meet in Hrothgar’s kingdom, where Grendel terrorizes the townspeople and the royalty. After many brave warriors fall to Grendel, Beowulf is the next one chosen to fight this plague.

Beowulf characterizes fearlessness and strength when battling fearsome enemies. Beowulf, the heroic protagonist, enters the village and addresses Hrothgar, a king, and his people with noble confidence for the upcoming battle he wishes to fight in. I swam In the blackness of night, hunting monsters Out of the ocean, and killing them one By one (153-158) Beowulf proves fearlessness; he can defeat any possible rival that faces him.
He had the courage to see many men trying to take his place as the King of Ithaca and the husband of Penelope. Before Odysseus came back, Penelope proposed a contest that if you could string Odysseus’s bow and shoot it through 12 rings, you would get to marry her. Once all the suitors could’t string the bow, Odysseus asked if he could try, the suitors said no but Penelope said yes. Odysseus strung the bow and shot the arrow through the 12 rings. After he shot the arrow through the 12 rings, he started to shoot the suitors, killing them all with the help of his son, Telemachus.
