THESES State sovereignty and the absolute independence of the nation state is a paramount impediment to accepting world agreements and maintaining world order, because the activities of nation states impact on others. This can be seen where Pollution or disease cross over into neighbouring nations An example of this is China, where pollution is not only effecting their citizens own health, though the effects of China’s pollution also crosses over into their neighbour nation, Korea, effecting their populations health and environment. → Organisations such as the world bank and the media have put heavy pressure on China to take drastic measures to reduce their pollution, and even though the UN’s World Health Organisation has set limits, China has exercised their sovereignty as the government struggles to find the right balance between economic growth, and the protection of the environment and humans. States create nuclear weapons, even though against International Law, which threaten all nation states There are treaties such as the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear weapons, whose objective is to stop the spread of nuclear weapons and technology, but this not stop governments obtaining and testing nuclear weapons. India and Pakistan are prime examples having exercised their sovereignty and not signing these treaties, they both have acquired and tested nuclear weapons since 1998. This threatens world order as both India and Pakistan are in dispute over Kashmir and if not dealt with soon could escalate into a nuclear war. States allow human rights abuses or internal conflict as other states will often want to intervene. This can be seen in The treatment of Blacks in South Africa under the apartheid policies The execution of juveniles in the United States The torture and imprisonment of democracy protesters in Burma In each case, these actions were
