Those Who Can, Teach Miss Ferenczi reminds me a little of my grandmother. She was a teacher for thirty-five years. Similar to Miss Ferenczi, she was not your typical teacher. One day, her students came to school and it started to snow very unexpectedly and the kids did not come prepared for a snow storm. My grandmother decided that a good way to teach her students about snow and the weather would be to bring them outside to actually experience snow for themselves. So she put garbage bags on their feet, took them outside, and collected snow. In the story Gryphon, by Charles Baxter, Tommy, the main character, tells a story about his teacher, Miss Ferenczi and how her teaching changes the way he and his friends view the world around them. Unlike Mr. Hibler and Mrs. Mantei's class, Miss Ferenczi teaches them that it is okay to make mistakes, she comforts and relates to them, and makes them interested in learning outside the classroom setting. In the beginning of the story, Tommy and his friends are sitting in Mr. Hibler's class. Mr. Hibler is Tommy's regular teacher and the way he teaches is very boring and not encouraging or caring at all. Tommy and his friends are not paying attention to him or anything he is teaching and only notice that he is coming down with a cold. “This cough began with a series of muffled throat clearings and progressed to propulsive noises contained within Mr. Hibler's closed mouth.” This way of teaching is not a good educational way of teaching because when kids are not interested and are bored, they are not motivated to learn. Teachers should be encouraging and caring to their students, especially at a young age, because they are the adults that the students look up to.
