Why So Serious?? “I believe whatever doesn’t kill you simply makes you a stranger”. Before looting the entire bank and wiping out his accomplices, those were the last words spoken by The Joker. The most discernible reason behind the resounding success of The Dark Knight which seem to have blockbust its way into the Box Office as one of the most popular film after Titanic, is the character of The Joker portrayed by the Late Heath Ledger. Over the years, Batman's greatest nemesis has undergone a multitude of changes. 1940s saw Joker as a homicidal psychopath, then as a notorious and inexorable maniac in the 50s and in a perilously murderous form in the 70s. Although Jack Nicholson’s interpretation of Joker was well appreciated in the late 80s, but one can't compare Ledger's joker to Nicholson's , just the same way as one can't compare Burton's movies with Nolan's. Without a shadow of doubt, in The Dark Knight, Ledger has given us our most convincing Joker yet. The role of a paranoid schizophrenic psycho has been justified by Ledger’s acting prowess. Sure, the basics have always been there, The Joker's maniacal grin, his unkempt hair, red lips and purple suit. But what sets this Joker apart is his mannerisms. The darting, unfocused eyes, the constant licking of the lips, the stimulating but yet eerie raucous of laughter is exactly what defines Ledger’s Joker. In addition to this, there is something that secernates Joker from other criminals. Firstly, he refuses to allow codes and rules to govern him as a human being. He seeks to create chaos, introduce anarchy in a civilized society. He is not looking for anything logical like money nor could he be reasoned or negotiated with. He lives to disrupt meaning and as he puts it “I am a dog chasing cars, i wouldn’t know what to do with one if I caught it”. He did evil for the purpose of it, he stood to gain nothing
