A Look at Scarface: ENG 225: Introduction to Film Instructor Corey King November 11, 2011 A Look at Scarface: Tony Montana for President or Public Enemy #1 The movie that was chosen for the final paper is “Scarface 1983”. I have always been a huge fan of the gangster flick. Tony Montana, the lead character played by Al Pachino. I have sit through the film too many times to count. In this paper I am going to look at “Scarface 1983” and the important role it has in modern day gangster flicks. Scarface is a 1983 American epic crime drama movie directed by Brian De Palma, written by Oliver Stone, produced by Martin Bregman and starring Al Pacino. The film tells the story of Tony Montana, a Cuban refugee who comes to Miami in 1980 as a result of Castro’s infamous exile of Cuban prisoners and unwanted locals, and becomes a drug kingpin during the cocaine boom of the 1980s. The movie tells in sequential order his rise to the top of Miami's drug empire to his demise. What few people know is this film is actual a remake of the 1932 picture of the same name. The first responses to the film were mixed, with the film receiving criticism for its violence and graphic language. The film was hated and protested by the Cuban community in Miami, who disagreed to various aspects of the film. They didn’t like that Cubans in it were compared with criminals and drug smugglers. The film has since gathered a cult like following and has become an important cultural icon, particularly in the hip-hop community, inspiring posters, clothing, and many other references. The film's grainy black and white poster is a popular decoration and is still in production to this day. Why the appeal? Technically in rooting for Tony’s success in the film you are rooting for the bad guy. “Say good night to the bad guy, you’re never going to see a bad guy like this again I’m telling you”
