She began to learn American Sign Language at the age of 5. Her parents tried to learn the language as well, and they retained a little bit, but not enough to communicate fluently. Since Marlee was raised Jewish, she successfully had her Bat Mitzvah by learning the Hebrew phrases phonetically. As a child, Marlee did an acting program at the Center of Deafness, a center that allowed deaf and hearing children to interact with each other. At the age of 7, Matlin landed her first leading role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz at a children’s theatre company in Chicago, Illinois called the International Center on Deafness and the Arts.
