Duval County Community Health Assessment and Intervention Duval County is located in Northeast Florida and it had an estimated 864,263 residents in 2010 (U.S. Census Bureau). Jacksonville is the largest city in the county and it is also the largest city in Florida. Duval County was established in 1822 and named after governor of Florida Territory, William Pope Duval. It is 918.24 square miles. Only 773.3 square miles are land and the remaining area is water from the Atlantic Ocean. The county is composed of five major cities: Jacksonville, Baldwin, Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, and Atlantic Beach (City of Jacksonville, 2011). The Naval Air Station in Jacksonville is the major employer for the county. It employs 25,000 workers as of July 2011. Some other major employers are the Naval Air Station in Mayport with 12,600 employees, Baptist Health Hospital with 8,200 employees, and Bank of America/Merrill Lynch with 6,400 employees. Duval County is also the home of the corporate headquarters to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida which consists of 6000 employees. There are seven major hospitals in Duval County: Baptist Medical Center, the Mayo Clinic, Memorial Hospital, Shands Hospital Jacksonville, St. Luke’s Hospital, St. Vincent’s Hospital, and Wolfson Hospital. There are over 1,020 health care providers in the county (Enterprise Florida, 2011). Population and Socioeconomic Indicators According to the data provided by the US Census Bureau in 2010, the age group which comprises the largest percentage of residents is in the Duval County are residents between 25 and 44 years old. This group makes up 27.7 % of the total population. The percentage of families below the poverty line for the county is 14.2% compared to 13.8% of total Florida population.
