Violence against women occurs in all societies and all classes, regardless of cultural and religious beliefs. Violence ranging in the forms of domestic abuse, rape, arranged marriages, and even female circumcision is committed every day worldwide. “Authorities believe, however, that at least one-quarter of women in the United States experience domestic violence at least once.” (Kramer) As a society it is our responsibility to condemn these types of acts against women universally and punish those to the fullest extent that commit such acts. More shelters, legal aid, and educational learning seminars in our educational system at an early age. “The US Justice Department estimated that as of 1998 there were nearly one million incidents of domestic violence per year in the United States.” (Lee and Newton) “Various estimates have put the number of Russian women killed by their husband, partner or a close relative at between 10,000 and 14,000 every year.” (Baczynska) Traditional practices such as; arranged marriages and female genital mutilation that usually end in infections and women or girls go untreated resulting in death. Some countries have a son-preference and women will terminate their pregnancies if the baby is a girl, because sons are preferred. “ Fundamentally conservative and guided by the doctrines of a resurgent Orthodox Church Russia has no legal protections for women, believing that family disputes- even violent ones- should be resolved in the home, behind closed doors. A new draft would change that by making clear domestic violence is illegal and laying out the rights of victims in Russian law time.” (Baczynska) If steps were in place to issue protection orders for those women victimized in a violent act for a longer extended amount of time, the reluctance to allow access to the victims home allows the victims to feel unprotected, and for the courts and community justice systems to realize that acts of violence of women are illegal and that those who have victimized a woman should be punished. “ State laws must be strengthened to ensure that courts and law enforcement officials take all necessary precautions to protect the innocent from physical or emotional violence, whether the victim is a stranger, a relative or a child to the perpetrator.” (Lee and Newton) Empowering women with education of their human rights, so that they know the laws and what their options are. “Typical prevention efforts involve training and education for persons in certain professions, school-based programs designed to discuss healthy relationships, and efforts to reach persons involved in religious communities.”
