Disorderly Youth in Public Places Brandon G. Creel Grantham University Abstract For this essay I have chosen “Disorderly Youth in Public Places”. I will discuss “What the police can do to prevent, reduce, and/or minimize the threat/impact of “Disorderly Youth in Public Places” in the community. I will also discuss how important community policing strategies work in stopping this type of behavior and how important the community is in the success of the police department. Without the communities involvement the mission would fail. Growing up in Biloxi, Mississippi; children played organized sports to keep out of trouble. Once they became teenagers and did not play organized sports, some of them became known as “Disorderly Youth in Public Places”. Today the Youth in this area have things to do to stay out of trouble. They are able to go to a skate park, many go to summer camps that are offered in their communities and some churches and organizations have places for the youth to go and hang out together at night. To understand Disorderly Youth in Public Places you must identify the who, what, when, where and why or a risk assessment to identify all situations and resolutions. The who would be mostly teenagers in 9th through 12th grade. The what would be the public disturbance such as: shoplifting, fighting, drinking, truancy, vandalism and etc……. The when would be mostly when youth are not in school: spring break, summer break, weekends. The where would be any place that young people congregate in public. According to Scott (2002) congregating is part of the rite of passage from childhood to adulthood, allowing youth to socialize and bond with their peers, out of the parents’ view. The why? Why would youth commit crimes. They mostly commit crimes for self-identity and self-worth in the eyes of there peers. It is peer pressure that drives these
