Manuel Landa October 15, 2012 Professor Johnson ENC 1101 Disaster at Jonestown Everybody felt they had a purpose going to the Peoples Temple. Some of the people did not like the integration and as a result they were asked to leave. Reverend Jim Jones inspired a lot of college kids and old people. He spoke about what’s in the people’s hearts. They all realized there is something much bigger than themselves that they need to be involved in. In his childhood, Jim Jones was obsessed with religion and death. His friends viewed him as a different person. Jim had a Utopia dream, and in that dream he wanted an equal amount of labor. It didn’t matter to him whether the people were upper class or lower class; he wanted everyone in the same class. He made sure every single person had a job and they were to work whatever orders he gave them. This all leads to the idea that Utopia was communism. Jim Jones favored strict obedience at the expense of personal freedom. Because of the person he was, he required so much power. All the use of power he had, he was able to control society however he pleases. One would be all the jobs created for the town. Jim believed that they should see all the things they produced. When the Vice President won he elected Jim Jones as mayor and the people including the chairman stood up and applauded. One of the things that caught the people’s attention was that it didn’t matter if they were black, white, Hispanic, or Asian; any race was welcomed to join. He stated that his group would have a diverse background of church meaning that if the people are looking for a certain religion to follow he would provide it. If people don’t have transportation to get to the group, he told them not to worry because he would provide busses just so he can increase membership and strengthen his belief. Jim Jones opened up to many people. He was like a savior to all of them. If the people did not have a father he’d had no problem being their father. He even went as far as saying he’d be their God if they didn’t have a God. All the explanations Jones provided gave people an opportunity to do something they’ve never done before. His ideas motivated them and people felt they could become a better individual going forward in life. Jones and his group all left to Guyana because he looked at that place as a one way passage to
