A simple poem, and seemingly short compared to the other two, it simply tells of the narrator’s views of the young lady he is admiring. Also unlike the other two, Poe uses positive words and rhythms to create an ending mental vision that illustrates Helen to be that of graceful beauty, with her placed in a window with a glowing lamp that signifies to him of the “Holy Land” or Heaven, for which he sees Helen to be the Angel of in representation. However, a poem such as “Lenore” is told in a much more saddening, although not completely depressing element. This poem exemplifies Poe’s more frequent theme of death combined with beauty is presented. Guy De Vere, however, is not completely saddened by the deathly occurrence; but he is rather outraged because he believes that everyone had “wished her dead” due to loving the wealth that she had carried but rather hating the pride that she carried along with it.
I could visualize that the person he is talking about is the most beautiful individual ever. I could see this by the way he compared her to “…night of cloudless climes and starry skies.” I could also sense feel as I read the poem. The stanza ends abruptly mid-thought: ‘a loner cloud’, the narrator feels it necessary to mention it at the end so we can process it. I will show how these two poets convey the theme of loneliness through their poems. In 'Medusa' we see a few language devices being used, "wasn't I beautiful? Wasn't I fragrant and young? Look at me now." we see a device of rhetorical question used here an this is showing how she misses her old self and that how she is comparing her self to her past and this is also used in the second poem to compare her life to how she was.
This is turn makes Miss Gee seem anonymous, creating sympathy for her amongst the reader due to her being unable to distinguish herself in society. Throughout the poem Auden shows her to be an extremely lonely character. She is only referred to as “miss” suggesting that not even the narrator, who tells us her life story, knows her well enough to address her using a first name basis. This shows that the character of Miss Gee has not got anyone to be close to, to the point of which her life story must be told by a complete stranger. Also, in her dream, “she passed by the loving couples” suggesting that she herself has never been in a relationship with a man and that has all passed her by.
However, she now realises that “no hand will save her”, but the poem ends in peace and acceptance, as death will be followed by eternity - “waters that bear me away forever”. The poem contrasts the unthinking impulses of childhood with the reflective appreciation of middle age. Death has been placed in perspective as only one aspect of life and memories and friendship enable people to transcend death. The poetic voice acknowledges the true value of friendship. Trapt In the short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, tells a story about a young mother who is mentally deteriorating because of her post-partum depression. This women must not do any physical or intellectual activity, she just sits in a room with hideous yellow wall paper and rests. The woman she sees in the wallpaper is trapt and alone, but that is merely her own reflection that she sees. In the story she is staying at a summer house with her husband, newborn baby, and sister in an attempt for her to get some rest and relaxation and to recuperate from her post-partum depression that she is suffering. They basically keep her locked in this room with mustard yellow wall paper with only her and a bed.
