Change for these women showed them a new world of decent wages and rewarding satisfaction of providing for themselves. Tasting the life of independence and workforce life, these women had to help themselves to travel to work while taking care of the children and balancing work with their home duties. As their lifestyle began to change and they must now balance home life and work life as the gender roles began to change in America. As a step in the door towards equality between the gender roles, these new jobs have now been opened up to women who need to provide for their families in World War I. Until World War 1 ends and the husbands and males come home from duty, they women are forced back into home life to resume their jobs as homemakers.
Firstly, employment for women throughout the war had a drastic improvement; many jobs became available for women to choose from. This was due to the gaps that men left in employment, after most of them went to war in 1914. Source A2 for example, clearly supports the interpretation that the number of jobs that women participated in increased from the years 1914 to 1918. This is because, the source is in the form of a bar graph which presents to bars, one representing the amount of women working in that job in 1914 and the other bar representing the amount of women working in that job in 1918. The types of employment included are Transport, Agriculture, Industry, Commerce, Civil Service, Hotels/Inns and Domestic Service).
I will also talk on how time brouht about a change for the women, I will compare the women from then until now. Women roles in the 1500 was very important in many different ways. Womens have always played an important role in the lives of mens, the church, the community, and schools. In today society womens are still playing an important role in the United States. Back in the 1500s there was not many schools, doctors/hospitals, and daycare center.
This is when women first began to work for political equality with men. They pushed for equal opportunities involving their careers, working conditions and wages, and the right to own property. A breakthrough came in 1916 when Robert Borden granted the sisters, wives, and daughters of soldiers the right to vote. Nurses serving in the forces were also added to that list. Unfortunately, after the war ended many women were pushed to the side, as the female factory workers, ambulance drivers, and nurses
Emmett Glasbrenner Sociology goes to the Movie Short Paper #2 04-2-2012 In the Stepford wives movie of 1975 we see the trend of the American culture in regard to women in the workplace creating a major shift in this country. The number of women entering the workplace grew at a tremendous pace, which fostered a powerful cultural and economic transformation of the American society. At this time, during the making of the Stepford Wives, many women were starting to examine their lives. Women were torn between the status quo of preferring to stay at home and take care of their children or doing some soul searching for themselves. At this time many women started to examine their lives and explore their possibilities.
For many of the women the war was ‘a genuinely liberating experience’ (first world war, accessed 07/01/09), and made the women feel useful as citizens. Also for some women it gave them the freedom that only men had enjoyed so far and ‘offered escape from jobs of badly paid drudgery’ (war and gender, accessed 22/01/09). In one women’s words it was said to be like ‘being let out of a cage’ (war and gender, accessed 22/01/09). The fact that it offered women freedom gives the impression that World War One did have a positive effect on the role of women. In support of the World War One having a positive effect on the women’s role.
The first official policewoman joined the LAPD in 1910. That was a huge stepping stone for the female gender. Even though her tasks were short and sweet, it still gave women hope. Ladies were allowed to work with women and children inside the office, however, not outside of the office. After WWII things obviously had to change.
Changes in the role of women A large majority of women in the 50’s and 60’s were expected to be a house wife: to cook; to clean; to look after the house and children. However, during the 60’s and 70’s more technology was being purchased and as a result of this was making the work of women a lot easier. For example, the washing machine became very popular and women saw that they were having less work to do, as a result of this more women wanted to develop their own interests. One woman said; “I was always trying to think of short cuts to housework, to get out and stimulate my own interest and that’s where the washing machine came into its own!” This led to more women looking for work outside of the house, which to some men seemed like an “unsettling and deplorable” idea (according to Dominic Sandbrook). Another way the role of women changed during 1955 and 1975 was that they were becoming much more confident this is shown by Dominic Sandbrook: “the results was that the conventional, patronising view of women, which presented them as weak, unreliable and oversensitive, was no longer sustainable.” This shows that women (with some help from the new technology) were becoming stronger and more independent.
Gough enforced the policy further and women could then work in most areas of the workforce. With the further enforcement, women received maternity leave and paternity leave while ensuring they didn’t lose their jobs. Although this change was not accepted well by men. The Womens Rights Policy, has changed many womens lives. Gough has given women the chance to live, work and get equal pay, be able to walk down the street without being abused, to attend university without discrimination, and a chance of a better quality
The Industrial Revolution which took place in both the 19th and 20th century was an important point in history that altered industry like never before. With the invention of new machines such as the assembly line, worker productivity and output increased. Mass production occurred within the Industrial Revolution which made goods more affordable. With this increasing amount of industry, the demand of workers and urban industrial centres increased. Because of this demand for workers women were brought into the workforce and left the traditional life of taking care of the household behind.
