Dana C. Williams Deals-R-Us Brokers (Part 1) Case Study a. Classify the two alternatives in terms of what type of application architecture they use. It was stated in the case study that the first alternative will have a special tool developed in C++ that clients will download onto their computers to run. The tool will communicate with the DRUB server to select data to analyze. Based on this information and research done using Business Data Communications and Networking (2009), the first alternative is a client-based architecture. This was deduced because it says in the Business Data Communications and Networking (2009), example for client based architecture that the application has to be downloaded onto client or user’s computer and then the client tells the server what data to select and analyze and processed data will be sent back to the client for display. The second alternative on the other hand is a two-tier client-server architecture. This was deduced because it was said in the case study that the second alternative will have the C++ program running on the server, the client will use his or her browser to interact with the server. (Fitzgerald 68) This is a characteristic of client server architecture because according to Business Data Communications and Networking (2009) which says that when a Web browser is used to get pages from a Web server, the user is using client-server architecture. This is similar to what was mentioned in the case study for the second alternative because as was mentioned above the company’s clients will be using their web browsers to interact with the server. b. Outline the pros and cons of the two alternatives and make a recommendation to Fred about which is better.
