“Katherine has admitted it, confessed.” Katherine’s fear of losing her life motivated her to confess that her and a few others were telepathic. First she had a fear about her abilities being found out but then she had to fear her life if she did not tell the norms what was so different about her and why she was running away. “I’ve killed him Michael. He’s quite dead.” Rosalind’s fears lead her to kill a man, yet she felt so guilty about it, although they tortured many of her kind. She may have felt guilty as she thought the norms would find out that she killed the man and then they would kill her.
Parris and Procter did not agree on how people would be accused of something. Procter says to Parris “But who tells us Rebecca Nurse murdered seven babies by sending out her spirit on them? It is the children only, and this one will swear she lied to you”. (III.116-132) Procter knew the girls were lying because Abigail had told him so. The fear of it being true made the people crazy.

The hysteria commenced when an Indian slave named Tituba was accused of witchcraft by 3 young girls (Roach, 2002). Eventually, under an intense flailing, Tituba was forced to confess of witchcraft to a court official. Tituba's confession ignited a series of witchcraft manhunts leading to women and men being hanged, one man crushed to death by heavy rocks, and 150 more men were held in prison awaiting trail .
Terror and panic rose in the Salem community as the paranoia and terror about the communists did in the era of McCarthyism during the late 1940s to the late 1950s. Because of terror, people behaved irrationally and foolishly, which led to imprisonment of many innocent people. Both, the Witch Trials and the Red Terror spread thanks to the snowball effect. After this event panic spreads through the village as people believe that witchcraft is afoot. During this period in Puritan Salem the church and the government acted as one unified force meaning when the accused are put to trial they also stood before their church (whose beliefs were very exclusive and orthodox). Witchcraft was believed to be the work of the devil and the condemned were put to death for acting upon their personal beliefs. This is a perfect example of persecution. The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, draws obvious parallels between the 1950’s Red Scare and the witch-hunts that took place in Salem of 1692. Miller connects the hysteria brought about through accusations thrown around by both Senator McCarthy and Abigail Williams by emphasizing how much power their groups hold over everyone. During the times of the Salem Witch Trials and the Red Scare, fear ruled those unfortunate enough to be involved in nearly any conflict. Be it fear of witchcraft or communism,the fact is that it swept throughout the early and post-industrial United States.

Dear diary, I have travelled the world and witnessed many conflicts, but the days of 1692 was by the far the highest, it was a time of fear and hysteria of people being convicted of witch craft. I am beginning to feel that conflict doesn’t just resolve matters it can bring the best, worst or unexpected reactions of people. Conflict in my opinion is to fight or battle over the one idea; it can also take over people’s survival instincts. Conflict can bring people together or tear two people apart and this can affect someone badly. The fears I had in Salem in 1692 was that the most honest and caring people were being prosecuted and murder by their innocence.
Wrong their neighbor? Was someone seeking revenge? Or were they just in the wrong place at the wrong time? In 1692, there were wrongful hangings of people because their community lied and their neighbors were seeking revenge against them. During the Salem witch trials, 20 people died because of the public crying “witch” on them.
