I bet you will kill it with your pistol. In the story, “The Most Dangerous game”, the same situation has existed between two men, Zaroff and Rainsford. Rainsford changed his hunting theory after he experienced the most dangerous game. At the beginning of the story, Rainsford shows a cold-hearted altitude toward to the animals he has hunted. We can see it in his conversation with Whitney on board of the yacht He, who is cruel at beginning, thinks that the world is made up with two classes: “the Hunter and the Huntees”.
Seasons Change; People Kill “Hunting? Good God, General Zarroff, what you speak of is murder” (Connell 15). Irony lurks in this quotation and explodes throughout the entire work of “The Most Dangerous Game.” The two most essential characters’ oppositions collide, blend, and finally reverse each other. Initially, Rainsford is the protagonist, but at conclusion of the story, he has become the villain. Rather than ending the “game” as the victorious hunter as Zaroff would have liked, the murderer becomes the hunted, Rainsford’s victim.
They are both selfish men, led by irrational motives. Macbeth killed a good king; he speaks greatly of Duncan when he reconsiders murdering Duncan due to his good heart; “Besides, this Duncan hath borne his faculties so meek, hath been so clear in his great office that his virtues shall plead trumpet-tongued against the deep damnation of his taking off. "(1.7.16-20) Macbeth also happened to be related to Duncan but that still didn’t stop him from murdering him and fulfilling his prophecy. Under Macbeth’s rule, people were in constant worry due to the numerous assassinations and experienced food shortages. The narrator in ATTH, killed because he claimed the old man’s eyes resembled that of a vulture’s and that he felt uncomfortable because he also claimed that whenever they fell on him, his “blood ran cold”.
"Who cares how the jaguar feels." This quote was said by Rainsford when he was talking to Whittney in the beginning of "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell. This quote seems minor but it really helps set up the entire story. This is because Rainsford goes through a transition from always being a hunter, to having to be hunted himself, which makes him the equal to a jaguar. This evaluation is one of many contrasts and comparisons between Rainsford and General Zaroff which I'll be talking about later.
The Most Dangerous Game At the beginning of “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Sanger Rainsford is a hunter who is cocky, hunts for fun, and doesn’t care about animals, by the end, he learns that being hunted is a horrible experience. In the beginning, Rainsford and Whitney are on a boat during the night talking about hunting because they love to hunt especially Rainsford. “You’re a big game hunter, not a philosopher. Who cares how a jaguar feels?” Says Rainsford.’’(6) He doesn’t care about anyone other than himself because he’s not a philosopher, he doesn’t care about animals. Later in the story, a man named Zaroff, a human hunter, and Rainsford are talking in Zaroff’s chateau “Thank you I’m a hunter not a murderer” Rainsford said to Zaroff (14).
23) Zaroff might seem like a nice guy at the beginning of the story, however he turns out to be a really cruel man. The only thing that gives him pleasure is hunting men. “I hunt the scum of the earth- lascars, blacks, Chinese, whites, mongrels- a thorough bred horse or hound is worth more than a score of them.” (pg. 18) Zaroff has planned on hunting Mr. Rainsford. “Your brain against mine.
Although he did kill a few people in the story, he never really wanted to. When he defeated Bonzo and Stilson, he did it so that he would not just win that fight, he’d win all of the fights that they would ever have. He never meant to kill anyone. When he found out that he killed all the buggers he started crying. The IF lied to him and told him that it was just a game when it was not.
Although Frank is a respected war hero who saved many lives and also idolized by David but when he treats the young Indian women, he molest and rapes them. He shows no sign of pity for them and will kill them after molesting or raping. Julian Hayden is a man who loves gaining control of others. He assumes that he’s above the law so ‘they couldn’t arrest us’. When Julian slowly found out about Frank’s crimes, he thinks that Frank should not be arrested because he is the war hero.
The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell focuses mainly on Sanger Rainsford, the protagonist, who realistically is no better than the predator, General Zaroff. The initial feelings of Rainsford towards animals show him to be cold and unfeeling. The location of the events are equally important as it impacts what the reader’s imagination and emotions will be while reading the events that take place. They also influence the theme and set the serious mood of the story. The narrator is separate from the story, (told in third person limited) and the reader is mostly only aware of Rainsfords thoughts and feelings until the story climaxes, then the game changes.
Characterization is the act of creating and developing a character and they can be both direct and indirect. General Zaroff, a Cossack, is handsome, well educated, conceited, immoral and above all a savage hunter. He tells Rainsford of his invention of a new animal to hunt, because he was bored with the typical sport of hunting. He explains that this invention is one that can match his wits because it can reason. Zaroff believe that there are men of lesser value, and calls them ,“… The scum of the Earth-sailors from tramp ships-lascars, blacks, Chinese, whites, mongrels- a thoroughbred horse or hound is worth more than a score of them.” Rainsford comes to understand he has no choice but to play the game.
