Cross-Cultural Stereotypes and Communication Wyora White-Scott CJ246-01: Human Relations in a Diverse Society Professor Chloe Robinson Unit 3 Assignment In the case of Chang and Lor who had their children removed from the home and taken into custody after their son was reported to CPS by school official that he was being abused. The parents are from the hills of Laos and are Hmong and the bruising came from a ritual known in Asian tradition called coining. The traditional Asian healing technique known as coining is a process that is done when you are sick where they apply ointment to the skin and then use pressure of a coin or spoon to rub the ointment into skin. This family wasn’t the only Hmong family that had their children taken away under similar circumstances. The father Lor stated that he hopes those who investigate such abuse have learned a lesson and will listen more carefully to what parents are saying before removing children from their homes. As you look at the scenario above you can see that it is in the best interest of the police and school official to come up with a dialog that can be more effective in understanding what is going on in a household. Such incidents as this one occurs very often and in some situations the children are in immediate danger and in others like above it was just a case of not being knowledgeable on cultural history and natural healing rituals. These types of misunderstandings can be avoided by just incorporating cultural understanding and diversity training in careers that will deal with the societal diversity and definitely for those careers that follow the mandated reporting rule. Now to explain a little more about culture which consistent of beliefs, values, symbols and language our society has opened the doors to many different cultures over the years.
